Do you have an open concept home? Are you struggling to make your rooms feel cohesive?  Does your furniture feel like it’s randomly floating in your room?  We can help.  Jess has compiled some great tips to help you feel more settled in any space.

Advice from Jess Chatham, designer and stager at The Cozy Home

Have you ever tried decorating a room and you purchase a lot of great pieces but they feel like just that … a bunch of stand alone pieces? There doesn’t seem to be one or two pieces that are the main characters with a handful of supporting characters (accessories). That’s what we mean when we say, it’s best to have a few pieces that are larger in size or personality that ‘anchor’ the room. Below are some great examples to help you make your space feel more harmonious and grounded.

Use a large statement piece like a sectional, XL sofa or statement coffee table. At one of my stagings I chose this nesting coffee table that became the star of the living room. It brings your eye to this part of the room and it paved the way for the modern/coastal accessories I chose.

Rugs also help with ‘anchoring’ a room as they allow a room to feel warm and inviting while really grounding a space and creating texture at the same time. Jute rugs are wonderful to work with because they add texture and really center the room around the furniture pieces.

Using art to anchor a room might seem challenging but it’s all about the proportions. Make a statement with a large piece of art when you’re working with a big wall or use a variety of small and medium pieces to create a gallery wall. Just make sure the pieces are cohesive and tie in with the other pieces in the room.
